How to start a generator that has been sitting

Start generator afters sitting

A household gasoline generator is a common type of device that is not intended for continuous usage for many hours. We mainly use it as a backup or temporary source of electricity, especially if it is a 10000 watt generator. Because of this, there are long breaks in its use. There are many cases that after a break, the technique does not start. Now we will look at the most common reasons for not starting a generator that has been sitting and their solutions.

Fuel and oil level

First, the principal cause may be old fuel in the fuel system of the gasoline generator. Many cases show that if gasoline is in the tank for over six months, then it is likely that the generator will not run on these fuels.

You can solve quite simply this problem: you need to drain all the old fuel through the drain hole in the carburetor sump and fill in new gasoline. Please note that most gasoline generator engines run on gasoline with an octane rating of 92. Check the specification of your device.

Another common cause is lack or low oil level in the engine. As you know, manufacturers equipped the most generators with four-stroke gasoline engines with special oil level sensors. If the oil level is insufficient, the sensor blocks the spark and thus prevents the engine from starting. Eliminating this cause is quite simple – add oil to the required level.

Air Filter

Next, it is about air filters. The problem is that they become clogged with dust (especially if the generator was violated during conservation). In some cases, new filters have to be ordered and replaced.

Spark Plugs

If the gasoline generator does not start on new fuel and with sufficient air supply, then it makes sense to check the sparking-plug serviceability.
Check for an ignition spark during startup. The sparking-plug must be unscrewed, then leaned against the ribs of the cylinder and pulled by the starter cord – if at the same time you notice the appearance of an ignition spark between the electrodes of the sparking-plug. If you consider that there is no ignition spark, replace the sparking-plug with a new one.

Besides, if there are signs of carbon deposits on the components, it is better to replace a sparking-plug with a new one. Otherwise, there is a risk of overconsumption of energy, increased loads, and premature equipment failure.

The reasons for the malfunction of the sparking-plugs are trivial, sparking-plugs are consumable that have a certain service life, they are not designed for long-term operation.
After solving all problems, you can start the generator and watch it work. Of course, you cannot immediately give increased loads. The equipment should run for 10-15 minutes at idle speed. If everything is in order, gradually connect devices.
